What is Remote Online Notarization ?

Remote Online Notarization (RON) is a process in which a notary public notarizes documents electronically over the internet using a secure RON platform that is legally compliant, rather than meeting the signer in person. Both the signer and the notary interact in real time through secure audio-video technology to verify the signer’s identity and complete the notarization. Additionally, the signer can securely sign their documents on the RON platform.

RON Platform – A RON platform is a secure, state-approved online system that remote online notaries use to notarize documents while remaining compliant with legal requirements. It relies on audio-video technology to facilitate the notarization process safely and efficiently.

How does Remote Online Notarization Work ?

1- The signer who needs a document notarized contacts either a RON vendor or a state-approved remote online notary.

2 -The notary then sends the signer an invitation to the RON platform, where the signer completes their profile, uploads a valid ID, uploads the document to be notarized, and answers Knowledge-Based Authentication (KBA) questions to verify their identity

3- Once the signer successfully completes these steps, they meet with the notary in a live session via the RON platform, the notary verifies the signers identity using their ID, the notary asks the signer a few questions, the signer signs their documents electronically , the signers takes an oath if it if there is a jurat certificate for the notarization, and the notary completes the notarization.

4-After the notarization session is complete, the signer receives a PDF copy of the notarized document.
